(WMC-TV) – A 17-year-old boy has died after being shot while leaving a basketball game at Central High School Friday night, according to police.

Police said Terrance Wilkins was taken off life support over the weekend.  His murder remains unsolved and his old neighborhood is mourning his death.

A student at Booker T. Washington High School, Wilkins grew up in and around Foote Homes, not far from Salem Market.

"Always polite, and when I say, 'OK, you guys got to go,' he says, 'yes sir,'" said Abu Said of Salem Market.  "He's the only one that says yes sir.  Very good kid."

Said, the owner of Salem Market, said he has known Wilkins since he was six and recently struck up a friendship with the teen.  He said the two often had long discussions about the future.  The last was Thursday night.

Friday night, Wilkins was shot and killed at Bellevue and Linden just minutes after a basketball game at Central High School.

"He used to tease me," added Said.  "He said, 'Abu, I want to be accountant.'  I said, 'You want to be my account you're going to do my paperwork every month, pay my taxes, and all that stuff.'"

Said has taken to collecting cash donations to help out a grieving family.  He said he misses his friend.

"Every night when I go home I close the store at night time," he said.  "Since he died, I've been thinking about him.  Why? ... And I hope we get answer very soon."

Wilkins' relatives declined to comment on Monday.
