(AP) - The Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association is showing its solidarity with Occupy Memphis.

At a Monday rally, association president Thomas Burrell spoke to the protesters about the suffering of poor black farmers, who were discriminated against by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for decades, The Commercial Appeal reported. A class-action lawsuit recently awarded the farmers more than $1 billion in compensation.

The Occupy protesters want to curtail the influence of big business and the ultra-rich on the political process.

The downtown rally on Martin Luther King Jr. Day was part of a national effort to unite the mostly white Occupy Wall Street protesters with African American groups that also are concerned about the widening gap between the rich and the poor.
