(AP) - Twenty-two people have been indicted on suspicion of trafficking methamphetamine throughout Arkansas.

The U.S. attorney's office calls the investigation "Operation Meilke Way" after 38-year-old Bradford resident Michael Meilke, who is charged with possessing methamphetamine with the intent to deliver.

Meilke initially was the only one charged, but a superseding indictment includes 21 others. Prosecutors say 17 of the 22 are in police custody after arrest warrants were executed Tuesday.

U.S. attorneys allege the methamphetamine was brought to Arkansas from Mexico and that the drug trafficking occurred in homes with children present and close to elementary schools. Police seized 13.3 pounds of meth, seven vehicles and more than $163,000 in cash.

Meilke is scheduled to go on trial Sept. 24.

His attorney, Justin Eisele, didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
