Ark. health official: 61 trauma centers on way

(AP) - Arkansas' top health official says the state will soon have 61 trauma centers as part of a statewide system funded by a 2009 tobacco tax increase.

Health Director Paul Halverson told lawmakers on Thursday that the state has 32 hospitals that are designated trauma centers and another 29 that will join the system by June 30. Halverson told members of the Joint Budget Committee that he's pleased with the progress in setting up the statewide trauma system, which is intended to provide faster care for trauma patients.

The Legislature in 2009 approved a tobacco tax increase to pay for the trauma system and several other health programs.

The budget panel was reviewing the proposed budget for the health department. It was scheduled to review the Human Services budget Thursday afternoon.
