(WMC-TV) – Southwest Airlines planes will eventually fly into Memphis, the company announced today.

The carrier plans to convert all of its AirTran operations in nearly two dozen cities, including Memphis, to the Southwest name. However, it's unknown if Southwest will expand its service in Memphis. AirTran currently operates four flights to Atlanta from Memphis International Airport.

"We are committed to continuing to serve these communities-at first via AirTran, and eventually as Southwest," said the company's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer and AirTran Airways President Bob Jordan. "We know there are Southwest Customers who want access to these cities, but have never before had the opportunity, and the markets have long desired Southwest service."

Jason Miles will have more on this developing story on Action New 5 at 6.
