Overton band needs help to get new uniforms

(WMC-TV) - A group of parents is trying to earn some extra money so their children can look extra good as they march to their own beat.

The marching band at Overton High School For The Creative and Performing Arts hasn't had new uniforms since at least 1998 which is why a group of band parents and supporters set shop just across the street.

The Band Boosters are asking people to check out pictures of, and vote for new uniforms for the Watkins Overton Marching Band.

The uniforms cost about $300 each, add about 100 band members and the Memphis Overton Band needs raise about $30,000 to get new uniforms by next fall.

Tonja Fields' son is a senior and won't benefit from the fund drive, but she knows the need and wants the next group of marching band members to look as good as they sound.

"You have to pin the uniforms on the kids. So, we have these big safety pins that we pin the uniforms on, making sure they look good for their performance. And that's been year after year after year," she exclaims.

But, she adds, those tattered uniforms haven't stopped the band from standing proud when they take to the field.

Director of Bands, Chris Piecuch say the school's award winning marching band also sounds top notch.

"And, when they step out, they're ambassadors of Shelby County and Memphis and we don't want that picture, visually, to be any less than the way they sound," Piecuch explains.

There are three NEW uniform looks to choose from, and each vote costs one dollar.

If you can't make it out to Overton High school to vote and see the uniforms, you can check them out online and vote for your favorite on the Band Boosters website by clicking here.

Voting ends midnight February 12th and the uniform with the most votes wins.
