(WMC-TV) - The wife of an Arkansas assistant fire chief is under investigation after being accused of spending the city's money on herself.

Authorities say the investigation in Crawfordsville, AR, has been an ongoing since June of last year.

Hannah Adell Lesley is charged with theft of property and possession of marijuana, but she didn't have much to say about the accusations.

Crittenden County investigators say Lesley, a City of Crawfordsville employee, went shopping on the city's dime.

"These were items that were bought on accounts that were set up through the City of Crawfordsville," said Mike Callender, of the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say Lesley stole $8,000 from a debit card belonging to the city and she also received $4,500 in merchandise from an account that was set up through Dell Computer Company in conjunction with the Crawfordsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Investigators say she obtained access to the account through her husband, the former assistant fire chief.

"My attorney told me not to talk about it with anyone," Lesley said. "So I don't want to go against his word. He knows what he's doing better than I do."

Callender said authorities learned about the thefts after they received a bill from Dell Computers for merchandise the city never received.

After conducting an audit, investigators discovered the items had been delivered to Lesley's home.

"When they executed the search warrant for some of the equipment from Dell, they also discovered in plain view some marijuana," said Callender.

Lesley is currently out of jail on $27,000 bond. She no longer works for the city.
