(WMC-TV) – A Memphis City Council member says she started receiving death threats after the results of a recent audit were revealed. Janis Fullilove believes supporters of former police director Larry Godwin may be behind them.
Fullilove has a reputation for speaking her mind and she didn't holding back Monday night, sharing her brutally honest opinion of Godwin and why his supporters may have a beef with her.
"He's a thug and a gangster," she said. "Nobody else will say it, but I'll say it."
Fullilove unloaded on former Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin during an interview in her front yard.
She admits, she and Godwin never got along and suspects some of his supporters may be responsible for a number of recent death threats.
"Maybe it's supporters of his" she said. "Maybe it's not."
Fullilove said me she's received three calls from a blocked number. When she tries to call back, it's restricted.
"They called me a "b" and that your "a" is dead," she said.
She claims the threats came after the release last week of an audit into the organized crime unit she initially requested.
The audit found, among other things, that Godwin may have violated nepotism rules when dealing with his son who served in the OCU.
That's why she says his supporters may have an issue with her.
"You know, I wanted to get along with the gentleman, but he continued to do the things he did and I continued to do the things I did -- to seek out the truth of what's going on in that department -- and I did," she said.
Fullilove said she is a little worried by the threats, but figures anyone actually interested in harming her would do so without warning.
Godwin, who now works for the Tennessee Department of Safety, declined comment last week on the audit.
"He is not going to make any comments," said a spokesman in Godwin's office when contacted about what Fullilove had to say.
