Human remains found in DeSoto County

(WMC-TV) - DeSoto County sheriff's deputies will have to wait two weeks to identify a badly decomposed body found in an isolated area Tuesday, according to officials.

Sheriff's investigators suspect the remains are that of a local resident, but they wouldn't say if it's a man or woman.

"Real unusual for this part of the county," said DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco.

Rasco, search and rescue, cadaver dogs and the DA's office spent all day Tuesday scouring a remote stretch of land at the end of a dirt path off Pratt Road.

The sheriff said the badly decomposed remains were in an isolated area surrounded by nothing but nature.

"No clothing; nothing," he said. "It's the skeletal remains."

Investigators said a surveyor discovered the remains while marking agricultural land nearby. They said if was too early to tell if there was any trauma to the body, but they do suspect foul play.

"I hate it for the family," Rasco said. "They will have some closure now."

Rasco said he thought it was a local person's body, but declined to say who he thought it might be. It's also unclear if the presence of the DA indicates future criminal charges.

Loved ones of 50-year-old Sherry Smith Percival, who disappeared last June, stopped by the scene to see if it was her.

Investigators couldn't confirm or deny that.

The sheriff said the body will be sent the to the state crime lab to be identifed. Results could take two weeks.
