Missing woman's family worries, waits after body found

(WMC-TV) – A North Mississippi family spent Tuesday trying not to fear the worst after human remains were found near where their missing loved one was last seen.

"My gut tells me ‘Maybe,'" said Brenda Voyles. "My heart is saying ‘No, no I hope not.'"

Voyles is talking about a badly decomposed body discovered in DeSoto County.

She hopes it's not her sister Sherry Percival who disappeared in September.

A surveyor discovered the body in an isolated area not far from the Handshake Lounge that Percival used to frequent. She was last seen at the bar in Eudora.

In November, Percival's boyfriend was charged with food stamp fraud after allegedly using her food stamps.

Investigators say he is a person of interest in her disappearance.

Voyles hoped DNA from her father would be enough to identify the body immediately.

That DNA unlocked a long held secret in her family that has left Voyles reeling.

"They needed the DNA," she said. "I had called my dad and said we need to get some DNA and he told me."

Voyles learned that day that she and her sister didn't share the same father. He told Voyles that he married her mother when she was pregnant with another man's child.

He raised Sherry as his own daughter.

"Angry they didn't tell me," Voyles said. "That my Mom didn't tell me, nobody told me. I'm shocked."

The remains were sent to the crime lab. It could take two weeks to identify the body.
