Southaven resident starts petition asking Mayor Davis to resign

(WMC-TV) - Some Southaven residents are trying to force Mayor Greg Davis out of office with a petition.

"I have no intentions of resigning," Davis said earlier this week.

Now that Davis has spoken, Oriana Hill has decided to take matters into her own hands.  She has created an online petition asking citizens of Southaven to sign it so their voices can be heard.

"A lot of people have asked me why even sign the petition if there's nothing legally that can be done," said Hill.  "But what I say to that is public pressure is really a strong tool to use to influence someone to do the right thing."

Hill said she is hoping to get enough signatures to pressure Davis by letting him know exactly what the citizens think about his decision.

"I'm going to try to do 50 to 100 a day," said Hill.  "The maximum we're going to get that I'm looking forward to is 50,000."

Hill said Davis destroyed the good morale and trust of the Southaven citizens and needs to step down.  She argued the mayor misspent $170,000 of taxpayer's money and he cannot come up with a plausible explanation.

Hill also claimed Davis is holding the citizens back because there are thousands of dollars in Mississippi Department of Transportation funds the city is being denied because of the investigations into his spending.

"Even if it doesn't influence him to resign from office, it will show him we no longer want him as a public official," said Hill.
