Ole Miss fraternity sanctioned for hazing, alcohol violations

(WMC-TV) - An Ole Miss fraternity is dealing with the consequences after they were found guilty of hazing.

The university began investigating the Kappa Sigma fraternity and determined there were violations.

Hoping to avoid sanctions, Kappa Sigma appealed, but the university upheld its decision and said there were violations of hazing and alcohol at the fraternity.

The university did not release specific details of the hazing events at Kappa Sigma.

The fraternity was also sanctioned.  Kappa Sigma has to develop an alcohol education and anti-hazing plan, as well as not being allowed to be involved with social functions through next fall.

No members of the fraternity wanted to talk to Action News 5 Wednesday.

Other students said if students are going to get involved with a fraternity, they likely knew what they were getting into.

"If they want to get into the fraternity, they are going to opt to take it," said student Victoria Gross.  "But for me, I'm not about to take nothing from nobody to get into a sorority."

The Kappa Sigma chapter is allowed to stay on campus, but the university is looking at ways to tighten its control over fraternities.
