(WMC-TV) – A Memphis City School bus driver is in jail after he was charged with having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Collier Orlando Smith is charged with statutory rape by authority figure.

Investigators say the 30-year-old had sex with the girl last Saturday near an elementary school.

According to police, the girl said Smith picked her up from school and they drove to the 1500 block of Drew Street and had sex on the back seat of Smith's vehicle.

The girl also told police Smith was her school bus driver.

"Everybody that has authority over children ought to be examined carefully before they're hired," said Celeste Wray, who lives close to where the alleged incident took place.

Investigators say Smith brought the teen to the Raines Station police precinct where he told the girl to tell officers she was a runaway.

Wray said it's not the first time something like this has happened in her neighborhood.

"A young girl came crying to the door knocking on the door saying someone had tried to rape her," she said. "That was 25, 30 years ago and my husband took her home."

According to Memphis City Schools, Smith has been an employee of Durham School Services since 2010.

He has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation
