(WMC-TV) - The Memphis City Council is preparing to vote on annexing part of Shelby County.

The ordinance that would annex the portion of Shelby County into Memphis is being heard in the full council.

It passed out of committee this morning.

The vote comes after suburban legislators introduced two bills in Nashville aimed at keeping Memphis out of the area that generally lies east of Houston Levee Road to the Fayette County line.

However, that legislation is now on hold.

"We ought to be in a position of discussing something new and how we can all get along living in the same community," said Council member Harold Collins. "Having said that, I believe all agreements ought to be negotiated as well, so the persons living in unincorporated Shelby County and outside our city and other municipalities, those agreements we made years ago shouldn't now be renegotiated as well."

Since then, people living in Fisherville have started signing a petition that would keep them out of Memphis.

Tuesday night's city council vote is the first of several more to come.
