Hernando court launching amnesty days

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - Hernando's Municipal Court plans to launch amnesty days to entice people with long-overdue fees and fines to come in and pay up.

The Commercial Appeal reports Judge Tony Nowak told Mayor Chip Johnson and city aldermen about the plan Tuesday.

Nowak said he and other officials have been studying an amnesty and decided on a Feb. 13 launch. He says that's when people will start getting their tax refunds.

The program is aimed at people with a misdemeanor warrant for contempt of court for not paying fines, and defendants subject to violation of probation for not paying.

Last year's total city collections were $217,000, a healthy hike over the $144,000 of 2010.

An amnesty program last year raked in $170,000 in arrearages from January into May.
