DA: Mother left kids in car with loaded gun while she got manicure

(WMC-TV) - Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said three young children were left in a car with a loaded gun while their mother got a manicure.

Weirich said she is completely outraged at the circumstances concerning the three children.

Erica Rooks, 23, is charged with marijuana possession, unlawful possession of a weapon, and three counts of leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.

Police said Rooks left her three children, ages four, two, and nine months, alone in her car where she kept a loaded gun while she was getting a manicure at Beautiful Nails Salon.

Police also said one of the children pointed the gun at an officer.

Weirich said regardless of a hot or cold season, it is against the law to leave your children in the car.

"We talk all the time, do not leave your kids in the car," said Weirich.  "I guess we're going to have to start saying now, 'don't leave your kids in the car with guns' and 'don't leave your kids in the car with drugs,' and so on and so forth.  But it's just one of those events that is really frustrating and gets us all angry."

At last check, Weirich said she believes the children were in the custody of family members.  DCS is investigating.

Rooks will face a judge April 10.  She is currently out of jail on a $5,000 bond.
