(WMC-TV) - As the temperature plummeted overnight, fire raced through a Memphis home where five men lived there as roommates, but only four made it out alive.

Following that deadly blaze, firefighters went door-to-door in the neighborhood to check and install smoke detectors to try to prevent more fire fatalities.

As flames leapt from the roof of the home at 422 Manassas overnight, Memphis firefighters rushed to the scene.

"The house was fully involved when we got here," said Kirk Lock, of the Memphis Fire Department.

It only took fire crews five minutes to get to the scene after the first call for help went out around 12:24 a.m.

But, the four roommates standing outside in the cold knew it was already likely too late for one man who didn't make it out with them.

During our interior search procedures, we located the body of an adult male in the hallway," said Lt. Wayne Cooke, the fire department's public information officer.

The victim's identity, other than the fact that he was elderly, was not released on the scene pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

Investigators say the victim likely died of smoke inhalation.

It's also unknown if there was a working smoke detector in the home. The extensive damage made it difficult to determine.

And, with temperatures expected to drop even lower throughout this weekend, firefighters are expecting to fight more fires.

If you live in Memphis, you can apply for a free smoke detector.

All you have to do is contact the Fire Museum of Memphis at the number at 636-5650.

Fire department officials also say that you should also have a plan of escape in case of a fire.
