Some fear airline will ground Tunica to Florida flights

(WMC-TV) – A popular flight between Tunica and Destin may be ending for good.

The quick flight connecting the Mid-South to the Gulf Coast was only supposed to be seasonal, but now questions surround whether the flight will be back in the spring.

When Vision Airlines came to Tunica last spring the flights became pretty popular.

"This is far better than driving eight hours," said passenger Andy Harris.

Vision Airlines began with two flights a week, but the demand caused the airline to ditch the prop plane that it had been using and start using 737 jets to accommodate the influx of passengers.

"It kind of varied, but we were at a point where we were doing nine flights per week," said Eric Konupka, of Tunica Municipal Airport.

The service lasted from spring until the end of November. It was only supposed to be seasonal flight service, but now there are concerns that Vision Airlines is pulling service out of Destin for good which would affect the Tunica flights.

So far, no one from Vision Airlines has said anything definitive.

"They really haven't been in straight contact with us in terms of what they plan on doing," said Konupka. "So we just don't know at all what they are planning on doing."

A statement from Vision said in part: "We have not pulled out of Destin. The Tunica - Destin service was a seasonal route. We are currently planning our summer schedule and considering Tunica - Destin for this seasonal service again."
