Oxford approves church building demolition

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - First Baptist Church of Oxford has received approval of city aldermen to tear down a dilapidated home on property the church purchased in 2010.

The Oxford Eagle reports that the board of aldermen's action this week overturned an earlier decision by the local Historic Preservation Commission to require the church to preserve the structure.

The church contends that the house is in such disrepair that there was no option other than demolition.

The commission had ruled 6-2 in September that the church failed to prove it had no other option than tearing the building down.

The church appealed the board of aldermen.
