Mid-South braces for possibility of winter weather

(WMC-TV) - All eyes will be to the skies until Monday afternoon as the Mid-South braces for what could be wintry mix.

With a winter storm watch in effect for Monday afternoon and evening for most of West Tennessee, northern Arkansas, and the Missouri boot heel, the Shelby County Office of Preparedness is on standby.

"We are expecting by mid-afternoon into early evening of having some significant precipitation in the form of snow, sleet, or freezing rain," said Shelby County Office of Preparedness Director Bob Nations.

Nations and his team will be ready to kick into action if necessary.

"It's as simple as making sure all batteries are up and running and making sure all the equipment is ready to roll," said Nations.

Nations said it also means making sure the roads are safe for motorists.

"Our Public Works Department has been very good about knowing how many of their crews need to be ready to go, how much of the salt that needs to be ready to go, and they've gotten pretty good with calling that shot," said Nations.

Nations said the biggest concern is the time of day the wintry system could roll through.

"They'll be letting school out this time of day and our commuter rush hour traffic," said Nations.  "We're really concerned when that occurs."

Nations urged everyone to be on alert.

"Trying to get people to slow down," he said.  "Nobody needs to panic.  Just realize what the conditions are and maybe you can leave a little early or a little later."

Action News 5 will have team coverage throughout the day Monday with the latest on the possibility of winter weather.
