(WMC-TV) – Memphis police shot and killed a 20-year-old man who was behind the wheel of a stolen car last Friday in Raleigh and investigators say the shooting was an auto theft ring's final chapter.

"When the officers got out of the car, two of the suspects jumped into one car and attempted to run over the officers and that's when shots were fired," said Karen Rudolph, of the Memphis Police Department.

Officers were first called to the Gardenwood Apartments because someone complained of prowlers in the neighborhood.

Jermie McCraven, who was killed after he tried to run over the officers, was connected to several auto thefts across the region over a six month period, according to police.

They say McCraven's crime stretched from Bytheville, AR, to Frasier and other areas across Memphis and the Mid-South.

Investigators say the group stole vehicles, rims and anything else of value inside cars and trucks.

McCraven's passenger was also shot during the incident. However, he survived his injuries.
