Memphis suburbs move toward own school districts

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Governing boards in the Memphis suburbs of Collierville and Germantown have approved ordinances that bring them closer to creating their own municipal school districts.

Officials in both suburbs unanimously approved the first of 3 required readings for the ordinances on Monday night, according to The Commercial Appeal.

The ordinances authorize officials to create and fund the school districts and to hold a special referendum May 10 for voters to decide on the issue.

Six suburbs are moving to create school districts separate from the Shelby County schools system, which is merging with Memphis City Schools in 2013.

Bartlett will begin its three-reading process Tuesday night toward a referendum for voters to decide if they can create their own system.
