FedEx gets approval to expand pilot training program in Memphis

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis City Board gave FedEx its approval to expand in the Bluff City Wednesday.

FedEx wants to move all of its training facilities to Memphis, and the shipping giant plans to spend more than $140 million to do it.

In a unanimous decision, the Memphis-Shelby County Economic Development Growth Board granted a tax freeze to FedEx.

"We're excited," said Mark Connell with FedEx.

The shipping company is planning to double the size of its Corporate Technology Center on Airways.  The project will consolidate FedEx's entire pilot training program into one facility.

In order to make it happen, FedEx asked for two tax freezes.  They argued that a $14.6 million break will result in $32.1 in tax revenue and secure 333 local jobs that pay an average of $76,707 a year.

"I think if any company knows what it means to be local, it's FedEx," said Memphis City Council member Shea Flinn.

The ramp up to the project will take four years to complete.
