(WMC-TV) - A Dyersburg doctor facing a long list of charges, including illegally prescribing controlled substances, has been in trouble before.

Dr. Debra McKenzie is licensed by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners as a medical doctor.  However, she was disciplined by the board in 2010.

The board claims that prior to April 4, 2008, McKenzie did not immediately and appropriately dispose of needles.  She did not properly train employees on bloodborne pathogens or potentially infectious material.

Investigators also found expired medications during two visits to McKenzie's office in 2009.

"The disciplinary action included a reprimand of her medical license and she was assessed a $2,000 civil penalty and ordered to pay court costs," said Shelley Walker with the Tennessee Department of Health.

According to the Tennessee Department of Health, McKenzie's license was originally issued in 2003 and is currently listed as active.  She is scheduled to renew her license in 2013.

"There is no state law or rule in Tennessee that prompts automatic action against a health professional's license if he or she is charged with criminal charges," said Walker.  "Everyone is entitled to due process."
