Memphis family outraged over grave mix-up in Mississippi

(WMC-TV) - A Mississippi family was devastated when their daughter was murdered.

Now they are upset with a cemetery they claim can't get their daughter's marker on the correct grave.

April will mark one year since Melody Jones was murdered in Whitehaven, but because of the mix-up she still has no headstone on her grave.

Without the family, the cemetery in Nesbit, Mississippi wouldn't even know where to put it.

"Parents are not supposed to bury their children. That's what I was always told," said Melody Clark.

After Clark's daughter, Melody Jones was murdered last April, that's exactly what she had to do.

"It was devastating," she recalled.

What happened after Jones was laid to rest rocked the Clark family.

They contacted the graveyard owners at Henderson funeral home in Hernando to get a headstone before Jones' birthday in December.

"It took forever for them to mark a grave and it was the wrong one," Clark cried.

After the family already found a misplaced brick with Melody Jones's name, they say the funeral home marked the wrong grave.

Clark stood above where she says her daughter was buried, some 50 feet away from the marker.

"My granddaughter is 10 years old, she says I lost my mom once, and you mean they lost her again," said Clark.

She's now taking care of her daughter's children.

The Clark family had a photographer at the funeral and on Thursday they gave me a copy. When I popped it in my computer, we looked at the burial site.

Back behind where Jones's grandparents are buried, a photograph shows where Melody was laid to rest.

When I went out Thursday, the marker stands far to the right of her grandparents, and resting over someone else's grave.

"It's your child and you know where they're buried at, and for them to mark a different one, that was unbelievable," Clark said.

I took the pictures to the funeral home and they refused to go on camera, but after looking at them, the office manager admitted the marker did not appear to be in the right place.

I put both sides in touch on Thursday and they're trying to work things out.
