Crews working to repair major water main burst

(WMC-TV) - A major water main along busy North Parkway broke Thursday night, leaving many without water.

The water closed lanes of traffic and shut down Rhodes College classes Friday morning.

The water line was restored Friday, but road crews still needed to repair damage done to the pavement on the parkway.

Rush hour traffic was interrupted Thursday when a major water main burst beneath the westbound lanes of North Parkway in front of Rhodes College and spewed water onto the roadway above.

Memphis police shut down traffic and MLGW arrived to address the situation.

Officials believe the broken pipe is up to 24 inches in diameter, making it one of the largest used by the utility.

The recent fluctuation in temperatures may have played a role in the water main break.

"The water main break was caused primarily by the changing temperatures," said Richard Thompson with MLGW.  "The ground expands and that impacts the water mains."

Delays are expected in the area this weekend.  It could be Monday before all lanes of North Parkway are back open.
