Memphis police investigate body found in Madison Co.

(WMC-TV) – A long list of law enforcement agencies are helping the Memphis police investigate after a burned body and car were found more than an hour outside the city limits.

The body was found in Madison County, TN, on Highway 70 near the McKenzie Store around 2:30 Friday afternoon. Investigators say the body was burned beyond recognition.

Late Friday night, Memphis police confirmed the burned vehicle belonged to Charles Jones of Bartlett.  Jones, a former Memphis police officer, was last seen alive by his wife Thursday morning.

The body was found almost within view of Becky Stover's home.

"People dump trash there all the time, and it looked like from the pics, that's where they put the body," said Stover.

The burned car was found just after 7 p.m. Thursday, around 10 miles from where the body was found.

Memphis police confirmed they were handling the case and that both were part of the same investigation.

However, while Memphis police are leading the investigation, the department isn't the only agency working on the case. Jackson police, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Madison and Shelby County Sheriff's Offices, Bartlett police and the FBI are all investigating.

Investigators arrived at the Jones home soon after the discovery near Jackson.  So far, Memphis police have released few details about the case and why they are in charge.

Police have not said how soon a positive identification might be made.  They said it could take longer than normal given the condition of the body.
