(WMC-TV) - A father is accused of chaining his daughter to a bed for five weeks with a dog leash and a short piece of chain.

Michael Gilman and his family claimed the chaining was the only way to keep the child from misbehaving.

The family hoped the chaining would prevent her from getting up in the middle of the night to get food, other peoples belongings, and going door to door in the neighborhood

"Some of the behavior of this child, the family is claiming they can't control, and a lot of what they did was for her safety," said Sharp County Sheriff's Office Detective Sgt. Ken Guidry.

"She could go as far as the bathroom, but was actually chained to her bed," he said.

The family said they had exhausted every alternative and that she was unchained when the family woke up in the morning.

The 11-year-old was able to get to a phone on Friday and called officers.

Deputies had to force their way into the home and the girl's 15-year-old sister released her soon after officers arrived.

Gilman was charged with false imprisonment and first degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

The girl's mother was in New York State assisting her stepdaughter for unknown reasons.

No other arrest have been made in this incident, the sheriff's office has turned most of the case over to the Department of Human Services.
