Miss. seeks execution dates for Puckett, Mitchell

JACKSON, Miss (AP) - Mississippi authorities want to set March execution dates for two prisoners.

Both William Gerald Mitchell and Larry Matthew Puckett had appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court turned down Tuesday. Attorney General Jim Hood says, in a filing with the state Supreme Court, both men are now out of appeals. He wants the state court to set Puckett's execution for March 21 and Mitchell's execution date for March 22.

Puckett was convicted of capital murder in the beating, sexual assault and slaying of Rhonda Griffis in her Forrest County home in 1995.

Mitchell was convicted for kidnapping a Harrison County convenience store clerk in November 1995, while Mitchell was on parole. Prosecutors say Mitchell killed the clerk by driving his car over her body.
