Ark. lawmakers OK consideration of budget bill

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The House has voted to allow the state's budget to be introduced, ending a stalemate over a Republican push to cut spending from Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe's $4.7 billion proposal.

By an 81-2 vote, the House gave final approval Thursday to a resolution that will allow the budget bill to be introduced. The measure required at least 67 votes for the budget to be introduced.

House Republicans had initially called for cutting Beebe's budget proposal by $21 million by targeting several agencies and changing the way a proposed Medicaid increase would be funded. Beebe opposed most of those proposals, and a trimmed-down revised offer from the GOP. Beebe has identified more than $678,000 in cuts he'd support.

The Senate was scheduled to vote on an identical resolution Thursday.
