Mid-South man charged with stealing iPads from Target

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South man faces a long list of charges after police said he stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from a Target store and then tried to run away from authorities.

Glen Sewell is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, four counts of vandalism, reckless driving, aggravated burglary, and felony evading.

Shelby County Alert detectives received a complaint that iPads were being stolen from Target stores in the Memphis area.  They put a surveillance photo on their Facebook page and received a tip that Sewell might be in the area.

When deputies tracked down Sewell in his Lakeland neighborhood, he spotted the authorities and then tried to get away in his truck.

"They actually saw him coming out of the residence," said Chip Washington with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.  "That's when all the excitement happened."

Sewell struck two deputies' vehicle, a neighbor's mailbox, and drove through a wood fence and into a neighbor's tree.

"When he hit the tree, it was a loud bang," said witness Amy Jackson.

Jackson said she was sleeping around 4:00 p.m. Thursday.

"If he hadn't turned that way, he could have been in my bedroom window, and my bed is right there," said Jackson.

He was taken into custody after he got out of the vehicle.
