Ark. lawmakers to work on $4.7B budget bill

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas lawmakers are running out of time to approve the state's $4.7 billion budget if they want to finish this year's session by a self-imposed Friday deadline.

The Joint Budget Committee on Wednesday was expected to vote on legislation outlining the budget proposals, sending identical versions of the bill to the House and Senate for a vote. The legislation is nearly identical to the budget proposal unveiled by Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe in January.

The legislation calls for a $114 million increase in Medicaid spending and $56 million more for public schools. Work on the budget stalled last week over a Republican push to cut more spending from state agencies.

Legislative leaders say they want to recess the fiscal session by Friday.
