Man shot to death as apartment fire burned

(WMC-TV) - Twenty-two people were left homeless by an overnight fire, but it helped investigators in an overnight homicide.

The fire sent residents at the Monterro Park Apartments running for their lives.

"When I finally came out, that's when we seen the blaze coming out of the window, and it was real heavy," said witness Larri Shabell.

Police officers who showed up at the scene in response to the fire found themselves doing double duty after shots rang out at another apartment complex next door.

"They heard shots fired on the other side, the western side of the complex," said Maj. James Richardson with the Memphis Police Department.  "Several officers had to climb the wall between two sides of the complex to get over here."

Police commanders said their officers got to the shooting scene in a matter of minutes and found a man dead from a gunshot wound.

"They found one deceases male black that had apparently been shot on the sidewalk beside the apartments down here," said Richardson.

The shooting and fire appear to be unrelated.  The main connection seems to be that both incidents happened around the same time in apartment complexes next to each other.

Richardson said just what happened remains a mystery.

"We were right on the scene, as close as we could be, and they got here, and we still haven't identified who did it," he said.

Investigators have not released the identity of the shooting victim.  Officers do not have any suspects in this case.

"We're still looking for witnesses and trying to determine what happened," said Richardson.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
