Repeal of trucker tax break fails in Ark. Senate

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A last-ditch effort to repeal a $4 million tax break for Arkansas truckers set to take effect this summer has failed in the state Senate.

By a 21-12 vote Wednesday, the Senate failed to pass a procedural maneuver to allow the repeal to be considered even though the filing deadline for bills has already passed. The effort needed approval of 2-thirds of the Senate - or 24 members - and it failed by three votes.

House Speaker Robert Moore said Wednesday morning he hoped for one last chance for the Legislature to consider repealing the exemption on commercial truck sales, which takes effect July 1. Legislators had hoped to rescind the tax break after the trucking lobby withdrew support for a diesel tax increase for road repairs.
