(WMC-TV) - A registered sex offender, wanted for attacking a 17-year-old girl recently, turned himself in late Thursday night.

Marquise Tillis, a convicted rapist, attacked the girl near Hacks Cross and Homes Rd. on Sunday, said sheriff's office spokesman Chip Washington.

"We're just very, very glad that this did not turn out to be a more tragic set of circumstances," said Washington.

About a year ago on Facebook, a 17-year-old girl was contacted by a stranger who claimed to be King Quintez from Aurora, Illinois.  The teen recently removed him from her friends list because he kept trying to contact her.

Sunday night, investigators said the man claiming to be Quintez showed up at the teen's house uninvited and lured her outside.

Quintez asked her to have sex.  When she declined, he replied, "You are playing with me."  He then pulled a butcher knife on her and choked her until she passed out.

When she came to, the teen was naked from the waist down.  She diverted his attention long enough to run away, but he gave chase.  The two tripped and fell into a barbed wire fence.  She still managed to get away and call 911.

Investigators found a cell phone on the scene.  Before they could look through it, it began ringing.  On the other end was another Shelby County Sheriff's deputy who was working Tillis' missing persons case.

Tillis' family had not seen him in some time.  Tillis had assumed the name of King Quintez and was living nearby, not in Aurora, Illinois.

Shortly after investigators announced Tillis was wanted, he turned himself in at 201 Poplar.

"He was seeking prey.  He was stalking prey," said Washington.  "He was somebody that we were very anxious to get off the streets and we're glad that he's inside and in custody."

Tillis is a registered sex offender in Tennessee.  He now faces an attempted rape charge.

Tillis is due in court Friday morning.  He is being held on a $500,000 bond.
