Luttrell says no county-wide tax increase

(WMC-TV) - Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell said Wednesday he has no plans to seek a county-wide sales tax increase, allowing Memphis suburbs to more easily seek funding for municipal school districts.

All six suburbs are thinking about forming their own districts.  The city of Arlington was first to approve a referendum on the issue.

A county-wide tax would have superceded suburban efforts to fund their own schools, but Luttrell said now is not the time for him to push a tax increase.

"Until we're strong as a community, financially and fiscally, this is just not the time to raise taxes across the county," said Luttrell.

Luttrell said he is not sure how much it will take to run the new consolidated school district.  He said he is willing to wait on a county-wide tax increase until those costs are better determined.
