Chamber audit reveals over $200,000 reimbursed to Greg Davis

(WMC-TV) - A new portion of an audit from the Southaven Chamber of Commerce revealed how much money was paid to Southaven Mayor Greg Davis and how little documentation was required.

The Commercial Appeal received a four-page report showing Davis was reimbursed $207,000 in a roughly seven-year period.

The chamber paid for dinners, trips, and entertainment without receipts or specific documentation.

"I'm flabbergasted," said Concerned Citizens of Southaven member Tommy Hurst.  "Absolutely unbelievable."

Hurst said he can only imagine how the chamber's paying business members are reacting.

"The next chamber meeting could be real interesting," said Hurst.  "I know how business owners react.  It's their money and the money they pay to the chamber is their money."

The chamber also receives some city funding.

During the last aldermen meeting, the mayor confirmed the city paid more than $10,000 in postage for the chamber to mail out its magazine, after a resident questioned him.

"Some might say, 'Hey, that's a good thing,'" said Hurst.  "I don't disagree with that, but it's still $10,000 of our money that was paid to an organization that clearly has a lot of money to spend."

The mayor is also under investigation by the State Auditor's office for questionable spending of city money.

Davis is still in the process of paying back the state.

The Concerned Citizens of Southaven will begin going door to door this Saturday to collect 10,000 signatures in an effort to have Davis removed from office.

"When we fill these pages up, hopefully the difference will be that he resigns before they hit the governor's desk," said Hurst.

Southaven Chamber of Commerce Director Ginger Adams said by phone Wednesday that she was not surprised by any of the information in the report and will continue waiting for the state auditor to conclude its investigation.
