67 pound beagle losing weight thanks to Tenn. vets

(WMC-TV) – There's been a veterinary breakthrough in Tennessee thanks to a fat camp for dogs.

"Mabel" is a beagle mix taking social media by storm and she's also baffling veterinary staff.

Beagles are supposed to weigh between 22 and 25 pounds, but this beagle weighed 67 pounds before getting help.

She was turned over to an animal center in Knoxville about a month ago and then brought to the University of Tennessee Veterinary School.

"She was just amazing, jaw-droppingly overweight and obese," said one worker at the UT Veterinary School.

Grants were secured for the beagle's weight loss program.

The dog fat camp consists of an underwater treadmill weight loss program.

Twice a day, three days a week, Mabel gets loaded into a specialty underwater treadmill. She walks for three minutes and rests for two.

The staff hopes Mabel can lose 40 pounds in nine months and be able to jog five miles.
