Flinn enters race for Cohen's 9th District seat

(WMC-TV) - Another candidate has thrown his name in the race to represent Tennessee's 9th Congressional District.

Tomeka Hart announced last May she would challenge Steve Cohen in the Democratic primary.

Cohen is a two term incumbent in the district.

But with the newly drawn state districts, George Flinn says he could win the Republican primary and the election.

"We're headed in the wrong direction and we need a drastic change," said Dr. George Flinn.

Flinn's a radiologist, owns a radio broadcast group and is a former Shelby County Commissioner. Now the Republican wants to occupy Tennessee's 9th Congressional District seat in Washington, D.C.

"It's not about me," he said. "This is about the people of the 9th District who I am very close with. I'm their physician. They tell me things about their health (and) about their entire condition of life."

Two years ago, Flinn spent millions trying to win the 8th Congressional District seat, but eventually lost the GOP primary to Stephen Fincher.

This time, he'll face Charlotte Bergman in the primary and if he wins, he'll face the winner of the race between incumbent Steve Cohen and challenger Tomeka Hart.

Flinn said he and Rep. Cohen could not be more different.

"We're poles apart," he said. "I'm an experienced businessman, experienced physician. I have never relied on politics to make my living."

The recently redrawn lines of the 9th District mean Shelby County is now divided into two districts: the 8th and 9th, and the 9th lost much of the Poplar Corridor in East Memphis.

The primary election for both Democrats and Republicans is this August.
