Cash says party was not to kick off future campaign

(WMC-TV) - Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash defended allegations he held a party intended to kick off a campaign to get him named superintendent of the unified school district.

In a letter to the Board of Commissioners, Cash said the headline in Thursday's Commercial Appeal, "Party was to kick off Cash's plan," was wrong.  Cash said the story, "mis-characterizes the nature of the gathering at my house as a 'kick off' to a 'campaign,' rather than the simple and genuine offering of commendation and thanks to my Cabinet is was intended to be."

According to the newspaper, the party Cash hosted nearly two weeks ago was intended to kick off a campaign to get him named superintendent of the unified school district.

"We don't have elected superintendents," said unified school board member Mike Wissman.  "Superintendents are done through searches by the board, and I don't feel like anybody should be campaigning.  It should be based on the job you do or have done."

Cash said it was not a party but a gathering for members of his cabinet, because he wanted to do something nice for his team.

A sexual harassment complaint was later filed against Deputy Superintendent Irving Hamer after he was accused of commenting on a secretary's breasts.

"We were unaware of any informal work session until after we were notified of the event that happened with the incident involving Dr. Hamer," said Wissman.

Cash said, "Having the company of colleagues in my home would be a refreshing change for a residence that had, for months, been a source of grief and loneliness in the wake of my wife's passing."

Cash then went on to say, "For the article to portray this family-like event in my home as a 'campaign' or 'plan' is to completely misrepresent the intent of the evening."

Cash declined to participate in any on-camera interviews regarding the matter.
