Police officer indicted for excessive force

(WMC-TV) - A federal grand jury has indicted a West Tennessee police officer for using excessive force and then tried to get help covering it up.

Ripley, TN, police officer Stephen Kirkpatrick is accused of assaulting and choking an unnamed victim in May 2011.

After the alleged attack, the 47-year-old police officer allegedly tried to get help covering-up the incident. A statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Memphis didn't offer details on how the alleged cover-up unfolded.

Kirkpatrick is facing civil rights and obstruction of justice charges. If he's convicted on all counts, he could sentenced to 30 years in jail and forced to $500,000 in fines.
