Investigators need help after 3 horses shot in Clarksdale

(WMC-TV) - Clarksdale Police are investigating after three horses were shot, leaving two dead.

Authorities believe the animals were shot intentionally.

Owner Catherine Davis was devastated when she heard what happened.

"I have no words for it, it was horrific," Davis said.

It's hard for Davis to stand above the fresh pile of dirt where her horses Pride and Buck are now buried.

"They were just like family and we miss them like that," she said.

Police are coming hard after whoever pulled the trigger.

"It is very shocking that someone would deliberately harm an animal that's doing nothing but minding their own business," said Clarksdale Police Captain Robbie Linley.

While Action News 5 was at the scene, investigators discovered a casing. It will be used as evidence in the gruesome crime, now all police need is a suspect.

"They could be facing felony charges of animal cruelty and I believe it could carry up to five years per count for each horse that was shot," Linley said.

Pride was shot in the leg and Davis couldn't watch her beloved 23-year-old horse suffer.

"The bone was sticking out and it was just dangling and I didn't know. I didn't understand until I saw the other horse lying over there dead and then I realized that someone had harmed them," Davis said.

Pride had to be put down because of the injured leg. A third horse, Cotton, was also shot. He's recovering after surgery.

"The fact that the bullet did not go directly into his body was a miracle," said Davis.

The rest of the horses have been moved to a safe place while the investigation continues. Davis is asking for the community to make it a quick one.

"I'd ask for anyone who knows anything to please come forward and help up. Help us stop this," she urged.

A reward fund has been set up at CB&S Bank in Clarksdale under VTDavis. Davis will give the reward to anyone who has information leading to an arrest.
