Chamber audit reveals details of money paid to Mayor Greg Davis

(WMC-TV) - The Southaven Chamber of Commerce's auditors revealed the chamber not only paid more than $207,000 to Mayor Greg Davis' credit card, but also paid for some of Davis' conferences, catering, and a stay at an area bed and breakfast.

The checks may have come from the chamber, but the $207,198 used to reimburse Davis for "promoting the city of Southaven" came from the money the chamber was given by the city.

Through the years, the city's annual contribution to the chamber has grown from $30,000 to more than $100,000 today.

In addition to this money, the city of Southaven provided the chamber with rent free office space at the municipal building valued at $21,600 annually.

Until October 1, 2010, when Davis turned in his personal Capitol One credit card invoice, the chamber paid it with no questions asked.  It went this way from 2004 to 2010.

At that time, the chamber's outside auditors said it needed to collect documentation for Davis' invoices.  The mayor's office provided some, but like the state investigation into his city spending, Davis was unable to provide the chamber with all the documentation requested.

When the auditors asked the mayor's office a second time for the documentation, Davis stopped turning in his statements.

In addition to the $207,198 paid to Capitol One, auditors also discovered the chamber paid:

-$100 for the mayor and his former wife to attend the Southaven Rotary Club's annual dinner in 2004.

-$1,000 for Davis' expenses within the ACYPL, which appears to be the American Council of Young Political Leaders.

-$1,043.28 in catering for the mayor.

-$1,707.96 from Bone Terre. The report does not say where this is, but there is a bed and breakfast in Nesbit, Mississippi with that name.

-A $200 check made out to Davis with no explanation.

Chamber leaders said they have only paid the mayor's credit bill and never gave him a chamber card to use.  They also said the review will continue.
