MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The faculty of a Catholic university in Memphis is protesting the administration's refusal to host a conference with a keynote speaker who supports women's ordination and once preached at a family member's same-sex wedding.

The Vanderhaar Symposium was originally scheduled for March 15 at Christian Brothers University, according to The Commercial Appeal. Then administrators said they would not host the conference because of what they call speaker Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz's "divergence from a basic Catholic teaching."

On Thursday, the Faculty Assembly approved a resolution stating that the decision has a chilling effect on academic freedom.

The conference has been moved to the First Congregational Church. It was established in honor of a deceased CBU professor, and his widow was on the committee that chose the keynote speaker.
