(WMC-TV) - A Memphis hotel has bed bugs and now its staff is doing everything it can to get the pest problem under control.

The Shelby County Health Department inspects hotels twice a year, but they had to make an extra visit to the Motel 6 on Pauline after a guest discovered some unwanted visitors in the room.

At the Motel 6 in the Medical District of Memphis, Room 330 is on temporary lock down after a recent guest filed a complaint with the Shelby County Health Department.

"We went directly to that room and the inspector found bed bugs," said Otho Sawyer, of the health department.

Sawyer said inspectors found bed bugs in mattress seams behind headboards.

"They're very small" he said. "They're a quarter of an inch and they're flat."

No bugs were found in adjacent rooms.

Motel 6 has a couple of weeks to hire a professional exterminator, if the bed bugs are still here when inspectors come back for a follow up they can shut the entire place down.

The Shelby County Health Department routinely inspects hotels twice a year unless there's a complaint filed.

When it comes to bed bugs, it doesn't matter if it's a five star or no star establishment.

"They're brought in in baggage, clothing, that kind of thing," said Sawyer.

The guests check in, but their bed bugs never check out.

"If they're overlooked, they can multiply quickly," Sawyer said.

There's really no way to prevent bedbugs. It requires a vigilant housekeeping staff to keep them in check and experts recommend guests do some inspecting of their own.

"Pull the sheets back, take a look," said Sawyer. "Look at the carpet in the corners and cracks and if you see anything that moves, you might want to talk to the management about it."

Hotels and motels are required to post their inspection ratings just like restaurants, but bedbugs only knocked four points off of the Motel 6 score.

And the list is pretty vague.

If you want to know what's really going on in those rooms ask the front desk for narrative from the inspection.
