(WMC-TV) - A body discovered on the bank of Nonconnah Creek Friday has been sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Police hope it provides some answers because right now, they don't have much to go on.

Beyond yellow crime scene tape and between the train tracks, Horn Lake Road in the distance and the heavy industrial traffic on Rivergate Road, police gathered 50 feet below trying to solve a mystery.

"Right now, he's just on the bank," said Karen Rudolph, of the Memphis Police Department. "He's not in the water right now."

Homicide investigators believe the body, splayed on the rocks of the receded water line, had been there for several weeks.

"The body is partially decomposed," Rudolph said. "We do know that it is a male. We cannot confirm the race, or the age or the cause of death at this time."

If you were just passing the spot on Rivergate Road you wouldn't be able to see the body on the bank of the Nonconnah Creek. In fact, even if you looked over the ledge, you still probably wouldn't have been able to see it because it blended in with the rocks.

A fisherman discovered the body and called police shortly after 10 a.m.

Now homicide investigators are trying to identify the dead man and figure out how he died, how he ended up there and whether or not his death was sinister in nature.

Police say they hope to know more about this mysterious death within the next couple days.
