"Airport City" master plan to be developed

(WMC-TV) - An ambitious plan to redevelop the area around Memphis International Airport is finally taking off.

The city of Memphis confirmed a firm will soon be chosen to develop a master plan for the project known as "Airport City."

The area encompasses about 50 square miles and is filled with blighted properties like the old Executive Inn on Airways.  The motel's facade is gone and heaps of trash were left behind when it closed.

The city has already sued the owner of the property and may have to do the same to others as the area is reborn.

"Now they're realizing the importance of rebuilding it, redeveloping it, and making it what it should have been years ago, and I'm really excited about it," said Memphis City Council member Harold Collins.

Once it is completed, the master plan will require approval by the city council and county commission.

It could take decades to fully realize the plan.
