Dead Pit Bulls dumped near West Memphis

(WMC-TV) - Investigators said a pile of dead dogs dumped near West Memphis, Arkansas point to illegal dog fighting.

Six dead Pit Bulls were dumped in a ditch in a field near the Marion city limits.

"They were all PIt Bulls in different stages of decomposition," said West Memphis Police Chief Donald Oakes.

Also dumped alongside the dogs was a cow's head.  Oakes said it was pretty clear the dogs had been used for fighting.

"The dogs have obvious injuries, ears missing," said Oakes.

Investigators said the Pit Bulls had been dropped individually instead of all at once.

"I don't think that's right," said neighbor James Williams.  "Shouldn't be fighting dogs, that's one thing.  That's cruelty to animals."

People in a nearby neighborhood said they have not seen any Pit Bulls there.

"That's pretty frightening, especially humans fighting dogs," said neighbor Bonnie Jones.  "That's awful."

Investigators said they do not believe the dog fighting happened in Marion or West Memphis, but instead out in the county somewhere.  They said it will be difficult to figure out where the dogs came from.

Police are hoping someone with information will step forward.

West Memphis Police and Animal Control are investigating this case.
