Off-duty MPD officer struck in hit and run

(WMC-TV) - An off-duty Memphis police officer was struck by a vehicle while trying to stop shoplifters Sunday.

Around 4:00 p.m., the 44-year-old officer was with his family at the Nike Warehouse on South Plaza.

The off-duty officer, along with another Memphis police officer working secondary employment as a security officer for the warehouse, attempted two apprehend two male suspects for shoplifting.

The suspects left the warehouse and attempted to leave the scene in a vehicle also occupied by one female.

While leaving the scene, the suspects ran over the off-duty officer.  He fired a shot from his duty weapon.

The security officer was not injured and did not fire his weapon.

The off-duty officer was transported to the MED in non-critical condition.

The suspects were still at large Sunday night and were last seen occupying a small gray car, possibly a Toyota.
