Police investigating middle school rape allegations

(WMC-TV) - Police are investigating allegations of a sexual assault inside a Georgian Hills Middle School bathroom.

Memphis City Schools officials said their campuses are places of safety and security.

"They go to class, parents come pick them up, and that's all I see," said Frayser resident Tierra Robinson.

School officials described a "physical assault" after a 13-year-old student claimed she was raped by a 14-year-old student.

The alleged assault happened in a bathroom on the Georgian Hills Middle School campus this Monday.

In a written statement, Memphis City Schools officials said, "School administrators were made aware of the alleged assault on Tuesday, March 6, and contacted the appropriate law enforcement agencies. The MPD sex crimes division is investigating the allegation. Because it is an open investigation, we are not at liberty to comment any further."

There have been no arrests.  While police are investigating, parents and neighbors said they were upset by the allegations.

"That'd be something for every parent to worry about, when you send your kid to school and you're thinking they're safe," said Robinson.

Memphis police did not respond to Action News 5's inquiry regarding the case Wednesday.

If charged with a crime, the 14-year-old would be processed through the juvenile court system.
